Cybersecurity in the banking sector

In a recent report titled "African Cyberthreat Assessment," Interpol relies on detections from Trend Micro's products and solutions to conclude that Morocco is the country most affected by cyberattacks targeting banks in Africa.

First, it is important to highlight that Moroccan banks are leaders in digitalization in Africa, which makes them more exposed to cyberattacks. Additionally, it is important to note that the detection of a cyberattack does not necessarily mean that an attack was successful, as all Moroccan banks have advanced monitoring and detection systems, as well as well-established incident management plans. Furthermore, the Banking Supervision Directorate of Bank Al-Maghrib closely collaborates with the Directorate General of Information System Security (DGSSI) to ensure strict compliance with current regulations. Moreover, the DGSSI regularly conducts audits following each cybersecurity incident.

However, despite the measures already in place, ransomware attacks and phishing techniques continue to increase and become more sophisticated. Therefore, it is crucial for banks to maintain constant vigilance to effectively protect against these threats while further educating their customers.
